INTERVIEW TO A PILGRIM AT CIZUR MENOR HOSTEL

We are a group of students from Zizur high school, that are studying third ESO and we are doing some interviews about people who are doing Santiago’s Way.

We went to the hostel in Cizur Menor and we interviewed some pilgrims. We have interviewed two pilgrims. We have chosen this one:

                Hello!

We are a group of students from Zizur high school and we are doing an English homework about Santiago’s Way.

Students: “ Could we ask you some questions, please?”.

Jack: “Certainly.”

Students: “Could you tell me what your name is?”.

Jack: “Jack Mcholland”.

Students: “How old are you? And where are you from?”.

Jack: “Twenty eight and I’m from Wales”.

Students: “Have you seen any difference between Spain and your country? What kind of difference?”.

Jack: “Yes, it is at the moment a lot hotter here, England negative and also the mountains, and where I live flat, and nothing like the Pyrenees”.

Students: “Is it the first time you go to Santiago?”.

Jack: “Yes, and I’ve never been in Spain before”.

Students: “Have you decided to go to Santiago because this is a Saint year?”.

Jack: “It is a family generation and my cousins, my uncles, my grandparents have come because I’m Catholic and also it’s a good way to have four weeks off work.

Students: “Has anybody encouraged you to come to Santiago?”.

Jack: “No, my family said it’s good, but I decided totally.”

Students: “Where did you start the way? And when?”.

Jack: “In San Juan, two days ago, so this is my third day walking” .

Students: “How many kilometres do you usually walk a day?”.

Jack: “Between twenty and twenty five kilometres a day”.

Students: “Do you always rest in hotels, or sometimes you rest in a hotel?”

Jack: “Never in a hotel, too much money, this is cheap and I’m poor so this that is good.”

Students: “Walking for such a long time, have you met many people? I suppose so, and what  hip have you had with them?.

Jack: “Lots, and excellent people, really good people and I’m travelling, walking with two peoples who don’t speak English and I don’t speak Italian or Spanish, so it is good, we use mimic gestures to understand each other.”

Students: “For such a long way, you need many things, but walking with too much weight is very difficult; so what do you take in your bags? How do you organize your luggage?”.

Jack: “I´ve too much, two fleece, two trouser, six socks, one pair of boats, two hats, two gloves, I was told it’s negative to wear lots of thick heavy clothes, two books, maybe 12-13 kilos.”

Students: “And how have you organized your life? I mean that if you’re married and you’ve got children, they could be a handicap for your travel. Are they with their mum or they are old enough to be by themselves?."

Jack: “No handicap I’ve no children, I’ve no wife, I’ve no girlfriend. My girlfriend left me last year so I’m single, so no problem”.

Students: “As you’re walking  your self, it can be hard and boring, isn’t it? What do you do in the difficult moments or when you feel alone?”.

Jack: “No it is no boring, it’s hard but no boring because I met excellent people.

I remember I only 24 days to go, you know 23, 24 to go to. Also I think of my mum”.

Students: “And after talking about loneliness, what about your body? The way is very hard, how do you feel? Are there any blisters? And if they are so, how do you cure them? Is there any kind of help for you along the way?”.

Jack: “Bad!, they hurt. Not too bad, they blister, my knee broke when I was 14 mountain biking”.

Students: “So now let’s talk about the end of the way. Which are your plans once you arrive in Santiago? Are you going to spend some days there? Is your family meeting you?”.

Jack: “Get drunk!, drink and go home to my family and have a big party.

I have to go back to England to work. I have exactly 30 days to do the way from where I live in England.

I have no choice. I’m a social worker and I help homeless people.

Students: “How are you planning to go to book your country? Are you going directly or you’re making some tourism: in Spain or in other European country?

Jack: “To go directly because I have only 30 days and I’m going to go to England by plane”.

Students: “Thank you!”.

Jack: “Ok, you speak excellent English, all of you!”.
